Slow Waltz

Slow Waltz of the first waltz started to mention in the 70 years of XVIII Century. Waltz appeared thanks to the many dances of various peoples of Europe. The roots of the waltz can be found in the famous dance for those times “matenik” and its variations “furiante, which are often in those days were performed at various festivals in the Czech countryside, as well as in the French dance” V “and, lastly, the Austrian” Lindler ” , very close to the waltz from his predecessors.
The birth and flowering of the waltz can be attributed to the beginning of the XIX century. At first it was popular in Vienna, and then spread around the world. In various countries waltz danced with the addition of some of its elements, so he gradually acquired a certain national elements. Thus, there appeared such as the waltz english waltz, Hungarian waltz, waltz, mazurka, and others. Waltz was on so popular that no one can compete with him in such a long and continuing popularity.
In the early twentieth century in the 20-ies in England, new dances: Waltz-Boston and a slow waltz through the development of musical forms of the waltz. Just they are the parents of our familiar modern competitive slow waltz.
In the United States brought the waltz in the middle of 1800. Rate Viennese waltz was pretty fast, and soon composers began to write music that was on the order of magnitude slower. This gave impetus to the birth of a new species referred to as the Boston Waltz. Valse Boston was characterized by slightly slower turns, and longer, gliding movements. Around 1874, in England, formed a fairly influential “Boston Club” that provided a basis for the emergence of a new style of dance – English. Later, English waltz was called Slow Waltz (Slow Waltz). However, this has become really popular only after 1922. Surprisingly, those movements that were characteristic waltz Boston, are very different from the movements that we perform now in a slow waltz.
Waltz began to change significantly after the First World War. In 1921 it was decided that the main movements of the waltz must be: step, step, the prefix. English waltz program consisted only of a right turn, left turn and change direction when in 1922 Victor Sylvester won the championship. In 1926-1927 Waltz gained significant improvements. Typical movements are: step, step aside, a prefix. And as a consequence of these changes have more opportunities for the development of various dance pieces. They have been standardized by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). Many of them we use so far.

History of the Viennese waltz

Year of establishment Viennese waltz is in 1775. However, the first mention of dances such as waltz, refers to the 12, 13 century, when Bavarian dancing “Nachtanz”. The main disputes cause two versions of the origin of dance – Germanic, in England a long time called him a “German” waltz, and the French, or rather, a French-Italian. Obviously, only one – the Viennese Waltz is not just from Austria, and call it so, since the peak of popularity he experienced in the early 19 th century in Vienna, the music of Strauss. Consider the two versions, while it is worth noting that most researchers believe it after all the French …
First version.
Waltz – This dance, performed to music with three strikes in the cycle. Each cycle begins with the shock accounts, and ends less isolated, which creates great difficulties for beginners and for experienced dancers kind of rhythm creates a delightful romantic play. The history of dance in “three-quarters” can be traced fairly easily, because most dances danced and danced for two and four accounts (all still have two feet!), And dance on three accounts are not very many.

One of the first dance to the rhythm of “three quarters” – a French peasant dance from Provence (Provence), whose appearance on the year – 1559, wrote to the Paris newspaper “La Patrie” (“Motherland”) January 17, 1882. This dance is performed by folk music, called “Volta”, although by that name at the same time there was an Italian folk dance. In Italian the word “volta” means “turn”. Already in the first versions of dance based on his being a continuous rotation.

During the XVI century volt becoming popular in the halls of the royal courts of Western Europe, where then were dancing. Arbeau describes this dance is like “galliard” (Galliard), the executable to the music in the rhythm of 3 / 2, but faster. At the same volt and galliard danced in five steps for six strokes of the music.

In volt partners danced in closed position, but the lady was shifted to the left on the gentleman! Partner had a partner’s waist, lady put her right hand on his shoulder gentleman supporting skirt with his left hand. The dress had to be kept, because during the rotation around the skirt became entangled pair and prevented from moving further.

The most famous image of the dance – a picture in which painted the Queen of England Elizabeth I, dancing volt Earl of Lancaster (Leicester), soars over the floor in the hands of the graph. Interestingly, the background picture is a hall of the French royal court!

Volta on days like today, the Norwegian folk version of the waltz. As in any dance with rotations, as one partner actually performs the steps around the other, they have to do is longer than in conventional steps aside. It is usually a partner feet long legs partner, and that partner could circumvent a partner in the Norwegian waltz he raises it above the floor and moves through the air. In volt partners did the same thing, with both clinging to each other, that in a secular society, the dance was considered highly immoral and was banned by the French King Louis XIII (1610-1613).

Volta, originally performed during the three bills, but actually five steps, gradually became the music performed in five accounts. Regular description of dance on three accounts named “Hole in the Wall” were made by Playford in 1695. This history ends waltz in France …
The second version of the waltz.

In 1754 Germany had the first music that vaguely resembled modern waltzes and entitled “Waltzen”. Until now, researchers studying the origin of modern dance, it is unknown how the merging and interaction of the two dances – “Waltzen” and “Volta”, while the German word “waltzen” also means “to rotate”. Music, the rhythm and character of which coincides with the modern tones Viennese waltz, appeared in 1770. Dances, “a waltz-like” first performed in Paris in 1775.

“Waltzen”, like the Volt did not conform to morality of the time, in 1779 appeared a pamphlet of a “Wolf” (Wolf), entitled: “Evidence that valsirovanie – the main source of body weakness and degeneration of our generation.”

In 1799 Arndt described the dance: “Lady raised the long dresses, so as not to get confused and do not tread on them, dress them suffered as a carpet over the ground, clutching the body of partners close to each other …”

Audience interested in ballroom waltz once in 1787 to set the opera in Vienna, “a rare thing, or the beauty and virtue” composer V. Martin-Soler and it danced a few pairs. This is where the dance has become very popular. Especially for the waltz opened large dance halls, such as “Sperl” in 1807, “Apollo” in 1808 (which could accommodate 3000 pairs!). In 1812, the dance appeared in England under the title “German Waltz” and causes a great sensation, reaching the highest popularity in 1816.

Initially, the waltz danced slowly and gradually sped up his rhythm. The fact that during the dance beau took the lady’s waist, was very unusual – in fact in most of the time dancing partners are in contact only with the fingertips. Because of this, at first many thought the waltz “immoral” dance.

Angered by Lord Byron in 1813, when he saw his wife in the hands of a friend at inappropriate places, wrote: “A healthy gentleman, as a hussar, swinging with a lady, both on the swing, and they revolve like the two the May beetles, mounted to one of an awl.”

The struggle against the “German Waltz” continued, in 1833 in his book “Rules of good conduct” Miss Selbart wrote: “This dance – just for ladies of easy virtue!”.

When the waltz emerged in Russia, nor Catherine II, Paul nor I, nor particularly his wife, Maria Feodorovna was not approved. Having ascended to the throne, Paul rebuked by a special decree to waltz in Russia, and until the death of his wife (Maria Feodorovna and died only in 1830) road waltz to the Russian court was closed. Both sons of Maria Feodorovna – and Alexander I, and Nicholas I – have not dared to mother.

But in private balls after the war of 1812 the waltz was one of the favorite dances. In particular fashion had brought the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815), which dealt with the fate of Europe. Day of the diplomats to solve important problems postwar, and evenings were active social life and danced at balls, where the waltz was corona dance. Many people then gathered in Vienna: the kings and emperors, the whole European courts, journalists and writers, high-society beauties, and all with gusto waltzed. Of course, that participated in the Congress of Russian waltz brought to St. Petersburg.

Another fairly long reputation waltz remained doubtful. “Dance this, which is known to turn and converge, both sexes, requires proper care to dance … not too close to each other, that would offend decency,” says the dancing Guide 1825, (Rules for the noble social dancing, issued as a teacher of dancing at Slobodsko-Ukrainian gymnasium Louis Petrovsky. Kharkiv, 1825). Youth, however, was from the waltz without a mind, and this time without him is treated no provincial, and the more capital the ball. After 1830, steel and waltz at court balls, and soon the fashion for this dance gained its second wind. Vienna is a “Waltz King” Johann Strauss, whose music is ennobled and refined the choreography of the dance. He performed more beautifully and gracefully, and the rate it has accelerated.

Contemporaries recalled that in Russia waltz danced quickly, so that the aristocratic youth the ability to rapidly whirling in a waltz benefit differed from the executors of slow dancing, not challenging anyone. “When nemasterstve my dance, I feel that your Russian waltzes, not only I, but none of my friends is incapable, – wrote Englishman JK Poyle Russian journalist, MN Makarova in 1805 – for them, for your volatile waltzes across Europe once you master, Russian, and, except for Russian ladies, these are too fast, almost air-petals not survive either the English or German or even French.

In 1999, 3 June, marks the centenary of the death of Johann Strauss’s “King of Waltzes.” He was born August 25, 1825 in Vienna, died in 1899. His father, who was born in Vienna in 1804, was then the most popular composer in Austria, his name was also Johann Strauss. Thanks to his upbringing, as well as the fact that they both were born in Vienna, the waltz was to bear the name “Vienna”. Very long for those days Life “Waltz King” lived in music, having written more than 500 waltzes, polkas different, quadrille, marches. He was thrice married, his first wife Jetty Treffz, singer, convinced him to try to force in the operetta, and his “Die Fledermaus” (1874) and “The Gypsy Baron” (1885) became classics of operetta. A large number of composers of the mid-19 th century, brothers and nephews of Strauss waltzes written, inspired by the works of Johann Strauss (Johann Strauss).

At the present time “Viennese Waltz” celebrates the rhythm of about 180 beats per minute, with a limited set of movements: change steps, hesitations, hovers, passing changes, natural and reverse turns, moving to the center and the rotation (Fleckerls), passing in contracheck.
